SKip had been sarcastic for a long time--you need to have a thicker skin. I remember back in 93 (when the Braves caught the Giants after being down 10 games in July) he opened a broadcast by saying "Hello San Francisco, this is Skip Carey, the voice of evil." The Braves have 3 of the best announcers in baseball in Sutton, Pete and simpson. Sure they are homers but they wil critizie the braves players in a heartbeat and they no baseball backwards and forwards. Pete has forgotten more than most announcers ever learn. I love em and listen to them about 100 times a year. Carey I don't care for all that much but he is funny sometimes.
I don't really know if Skip Caray has a few or not, but I wouldn't put it past him. Most of the booths surrounding the broadcast booths at Turner Field have fully stocked bars. I have to agree that the Astros will probably win the short series with the pitching that they have available, although Atlanta does have an interesting combination of seasoned veterans with plenty of playoff experience, along with some young aggressive rookies who should be able to make it pretty interesting. But... The Braves, in reality, are one good arm and one good bat short of being championship caliber. I'm just happy that they won the division again in spite of AOL cutting the Braves payroll by $25 million during the off season.
I know that Harry Caray used to drink when he was a White Sox announcer back in the 70's. He used to share play by play with Jimmy Piersall. That matchup would cause anyone to drink heavily.
The player I fear most from causing the Astros havoc is Giles. He is a sparkplug and just a tremendous player. If I had to put together a team from any players in the league, he would be my 2nd baseman.
Giles is pretty reckless, and gets banged up quite a bit, but at least you know you're getting his full throttle on every effort. Charles Thomas came in from being an obscure rookie at Richmond to take control of left field after they moved Chipper Jones back to third base becasue of a bad hamstring. He has really helped out to set the Braves on fire, especially right after the All-Star break.
I'm as big a Braves fan as anyone in the world and I can't stand Skip Carey. He's a complete @sshole. I listened to his call in show for 10 years listening to him be as rude as humanly possible to every single caller. He's a dick.
