Do I think people will be calling for his head? Yes. Do I think it will be deserving? NO. I think we LSU fans have become spoiled with the success in baseball. We are disappointed in anything less than a national title. Just think how many teams would love to be in the final eight? I think there is something like 300 Div 1-A baseball teams. I'll admit I was upset with last years 0-2 and BBQ. But after I got over the intial frustration, LSU had at least a decent year that shouldn't require the coach to worry about losing his job. Just my opinion. :geaux:
I am not as hardcore a baseball fan as some but... My expectation for LSU baseball each season is for them to host a regional. As long as that continues to happen, LSU baseball is still doing well imo. Any success beyond the opening regional - super regionals, CWS - is icing on the cake. Smoke is doing a fine job for LSU.
First off, I was not calling for Smoke to be fired. I simply asked if anyone would be calling for his head if this season turns out like the last two years. Second, I do feel that Smoke is the second largest coaching liability at LSU, but that makes it sound like he is neck and neck with Brady, which he is not. Biggest Coaching Liability: John Brady DISTANT Second: Smoke Laval, unless he can win at least 1 game the next time he goes to Omaha. Third: Les Miles and Shaver only because they haven't coached a game yet. I love Satudays and Sundays at the Box, and regardless of who is in the dugout coaching I would support LSU, but I am just being critical of the pitchers that we have been pulling in that haven't been able to get it done which falls on Smoke. If Smoke can't get it done this year with the pitching that he has brought in (suppose to be damn good) then I just don't know what else he needs.
By this statement, if I may correlate, you would be happy if LSU went to 3 BCS Bowls in a row and lost them all. Sorry but just being there is almost a given for the talent that we bring in constantly. Everyone that wants to play competitive baseball at the collegiate level comes to LSU, Stanford, or Texas...
I am not saying that he should be fired, just that he hasn't done much since being here, and should step it up this season.
I agree. Smoke did not have to build a dynasty. He had to maintian one. I like him alot. I truly believe he knows baseball better than Skip did. I don't know that he can motivate a team. LSU has not won the big games with Smoke. Getting to the CWS is not enough. We need to be competetive there.
This is a really silly thread. NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS ON THE FIELD, Smoke will not be fired as the HC of LSU baseball in 2005. There is really no need to add to this thread, or to start another thread like this one during the season.
Amen. What a bunch of spoiled fans if we think we should fire him simply because we don't win the NC. And no...no one has said this....just saying if people think that
