Smokers 1, Gov. Edith Bunker 0

As per the WJBO News Alert I just received on my e-mail:

    1:27pm --

No Vote on Cigarette Tax --

Gov. Blanco says that she will NOT seek passage of the $1.00 per-pack
hike in the cigarette tax. Gov. Blanco said there will be no
'significant' pay raise for teachers this year. Updates on NewsRadio
    1150 WJBO

Looks like The Dingbat just took another hit...

Revenue would actually go down because of the black market increased taxation would create. Not to mention the people who will just go to Mississippi or Texas to load up on smokes legally.

I don't smoke either, but you're right. This was a stupid idea. And don't get the idea that even if it had passed and was collectable that the money would
have gone to the teachers, anyway. I've seen stuff like this far too many times not to know better. All these gambling boats we have in this state, in addition to that monstrosity in New Orleans were supposed to fund teacher pay increases...15 years later, why haven't they gotten a raise?

I think the intention is to make peoples bad habits go toward some good. It's still a dumbass idea, though. But yeah, those great ideas never seem to materialize.

yeah that was the main reason I was for the casinos. then you get to see the pie chart at the end of the fiscal year with OTHER highlighted. always the largest wedge and its shoved right up the teacher's collective asses.

What I thought was hilarious was that like 80% of the teachers I had in high school smoked.... I did go to an all guy Catholic school, and with no girls to distract us, we had to make the lives of our teachers miserable. That may be why nearly all of them smoke. (I am also aware this pay raise would not affect these teachers of mine)

I try to keep up with La. political goings-on as best I can but miss a lot of information on current events. My question is (I'm interested in facts, not trying to stir up bashing).....what of significance has this governor accomplished ?

    and.....who's gonna challenge her ?

Well, she's made a significant jackass out of herself. That's about it.

Well, she's managed to reward her and her husband's cronies. She's Edwin Edwards in a skirt in that regard.

Other than that, zero. Zip. Nada.

I'm guessing John Breaux. My understanding is that he wants to be Governor so bad, it hurts. I'd probably vote for him, too.
