How do y'all feel about smoking bans in bars, restaurants, etc. I am not a smoker, haven't smoked in 16 years. I can't stand being around it. That said, if I want to open a bar and allow smoking I should be allowed to. All of this crap I hear about 2nd hand smoke for bartenders and other employees is BS. If you don't want to be around smoke, don't work here.

When Lisa and I go to the Quarter, we are careful to pick bars that aren't too smokey. We pick the ones that are on the corners so that the have doors open on 2 walls to help air it out. That said, I fully support the owners to allow smoking in their bars.

We go to a bar here in Mandeville called Oblisk. It is nonsmoking and I like it a lot. That owner made the choice to exclude the business he would get from smokers in hopes of getting more business from nonsmokers. I would probably do the same if I opened a bar in Mandeville. In the Quarter, I would allow it. It would be purely a financial decision.

On a separate note, if I was a cop, I would write a lot of tickets for littering when people throw their butts on the ground.

Your poll has a bias to it. An opposite bias would have choices....

yes - second hand smoke causes illness that costs all of us money
no - I don't pay taxes so i don't care if the gov't spends money on 2nd hand smoke illness.

To get some real answers, perhaps these should be the choices.....

    yes
    no

As for me, I can't seem to ever look at this issue objectively. My disdain for being around smokers influences me too much so I silently root for all smoking bans while never taking a position. It's really a courageous, "out on a limb" type of stance

I thought about that, but that really is how it falls out. For you peeps who have no courage, I'll add a simple yes and no.

Edit: Can't seem to change it. That's cool, because the choices really are what they should be. Take a stand man. Vote with your wallet. I hate smoking too, but it is legal. If you don't like being around it, don't go to those places.

I hate smoke, so while I like what the basn accomplish I hate that they exist. I am capable of finding bars that are not too smokey for me or finding alternative places to spend my time that aren't smokey at all. And as for workers... I have never met a bartender or blackjack dealer working at gun point.

I like to play blackjack. Haven't found a smoke free Casino yet, plus it's illegal for me to operate one in my basement. That's what the feds told me anyway.

This is thing…I bartended in bars that were smoking and bars that self banned smoking. When leaving the former, I left smelling so bad that I had to take my clothes off before entering my house. Plus, the heavy smoking crowds weren’t always the best people, they were for the most part rude, didn’t tip unless you had tits, and refused to leave when time to close. The non-smokers were for the most part polite and patient and tipped very well.

I’m biased because of my experiences but non-smoking bars are soooooo much better. States that have banned smoking in bars have actually seen an increase of profits in the industry. Smoking is proven to actually deter business.

Like I always told people who questioned why we didn’t allow smoking, it is a lot easier for someone to step outside for a smoke then it is for everyone else to hold their breath until the smoke clears out.

No, but I've meet a lot that it was the only work they could find. So it was either that or take unemployment.

See, that's the thing. Let the market take care of it. We don't need the government sticking their legislative nose into it.

I seriously doubt it was the only work they could find. I bartended and dj'd. It was fun. If I wanted this fun job, I put up with the conditions in the place I chose to work at. I could have always found a retail job or worked at UPS or done constuction or......

So I should have to ban smoking so that you can play blackjack because you like it? There are tons of things that I like to do. Business owners should not have to change their business model because I like to do them.

Playing blackjack at home is only illegal if the house keeps a cut of the winnings.

True..owners could just go the "I'll choose to ban smoking route" but it is HARD to get people not to smoke.

They were pretty dumb brah...basically a walking talking set of boobs. It was either that or hop on the pole...guess they could of went to work for a Dollar store, but Dollar Store pay checks don't buy as many diapers.

I agreed with this when smoked and before I visited states that had smoking bans. I'm pretty damn conservative and for small government interaction, but when it comes to this I say ban the ****. I'm also for legalization of weed and prostitution. Everything else I’m on the right.
