Because it's the same problem with preseason rankings before anyone has played a snap. Why have preconceived notions of who should be in the running for the Heisman before we play any football? Tre Mason ran for over 1600 yards with 22 TDs scored. He ran for over 120 yards and scored twice in Auburn's only loss of the season. He dominated Bama and Missouri. It's too bad they didn't let him run for 300 yards and score 6 TDs vs both Western Carolina and FAU. He got only 16 carries combined for 160 yards and 3 TDs in those 2 games. He would have topped the magical 2,000 yard mark, approaching 30 TDs for the season. Yet he probably won't even get invited to New York. That's just plain silly.
I get your point but I don't think Winston was garnering in a lot of Heisman talk before the season started. He's just the poster boy for the #1 team in the country. He would still be a better winner than Troy Smith or Mark Ingram. It's been a weak year where all the players fell at least once, except Winston but he never had a 'Heisman moment' either. I would still go Tre Mason just because he has been more instrumental in big wins against big opponents. Let's hope the voters afree
I say give it to the guy who leads his team to a win in the national championship game. It is a regular season award because back in the day a lot of teams didn't go bowling, they should change that. Both guys are deserving in my opinion, so let's see who does the best in the big game. Also, it can help prove a guy can do it against good competition in most cases.
