Around here, you hear Spurrier's name tossed about quite often by the Help Mack pack bunch. Doesn't seem like a good fit to me. Maybe I misjudge him but Spurrier seems aloof, condescending, arrogant...I could go on. I don't think that works well with the big cigars who "run" Texas football. Besides being a terrible coach, Mackovic didn't fit at UT for the same reasons I think Spurrier wouldn't fit. Probably won't matter anyway. Mack will win 9 or 10 or more this year, the stadium is always full, the money's rolling in and the big cigars won't fire him just because he can't beat the land thieves. :nope:
You mean Spurrier is too much like the horns fans?! Brown can continue winning 9+ games each year, but if he doesn't beat OU he will, eventually, be sent packing. John Mackovick was not a good fit at ut because he was not a good enough coach. His personality would have been no problem if he had been winning championships...
If he does go to SC, one can only conclude that he really does have some sort of beef with UF. I mean, same conference, same DIVISION? Yeah, if that happens, rest assured that SOS wasn't all that happy with the Gators when he left and isn't still. BTW, I don't believe he is serious about SC. Couple this rumor with a story saying he will coach again in college when he gets his next job (not the NFL) and I believe the SC story is meant to ramp up the pressure on Texas to cut bait with Mack at the end of the season.
I know you're in Austin and all, but I can't help but think that those 9 or 10 wins a year will get very, very old very, very soon. Having to blow 34 years of dust (and counting) off that last National Championship trophy has to be getting pretty old, IMO.
You may be right, particularly if the horns were to lose to the aggies and maybe lose a bowl game. I'm not sure that'll happen although I would give the aggies a decent shot to beat them if their QB's healthy. It just seems that the same thing happens every year (sooners beat 'em), there's a lot of grumbling for a week or two, then they go on a winning streak and all seems forgiven. I know it's difficult for the die-hards to handle losing to OU every year but if he beats everybody else on his schedule, I'll be surprised if Mack is not here for a long time. You are right on about Mackovic. Besides being a "bad fit", he just wasn't much of a coach. He did alienate many of the big cigars, former players and coaches, as well as many fans. My point is that Mack is cut more slack by the powers that be than Mackovic was. Mack's good ole boy image fits better I think and as long as he wins 90% of his games, I'll be surprised if he gets the boot. I'll be more surprised if he ever beats Stoops.
Come on. Do you realize how many NCs they've won in.......................................................................................................................................................................swimming ?
Keep in mind that excellent coaches may only flourish with one team. Or at least keep in mind that a fantastic coach for the gators may not make a fantastic coach for the gamecocks. Look at Tommy Bowden. Everyone thought he'd build Clemson into a powerhouse after what he did to Tulane. Francione was decidedly mediocre at Bama and now he's starting to make A&M look pretty damn good. Just stating a point.
Franchione is an excellent coach but was mislead by the Bummers so he bailed before getting his players and system in place then showed zero character by bailing on his kids without being honest with them. Still a very good coach, just part loser for doing what he did.
But he is still a classless @sshole in my book. :thumb: Whaa, whaa internet rumors make him bitchy.(Fran, that is)
I thought that the OSU game was going to seal Mack's fate until they scored 7 unanswered TD's and held OSU scoreless in the 2nd half. After that victory they may actually have a shot at a BCS bowl and if that happens I think it would secure his job for several more years at least. Especially due to the fact that he continues to do a great job recruiting. As far as Spurrier, I think competing against people he holds a grudge against is only natural for an egomaniac so the SC situation may not be that far fetched.
