Tirk, while I believe Skip did a great job with the power of positive thinking, I also firmly believe he was a lot more successful because the lineups were loaded and the law of averages were with them on many occasions. Confidence is an important part of all sports no doubt, and Skip was a master at getting the players to believe in themselves, but at the same time it does come down to the player beleiving in himself and when they are slumping they aren't going to be as confident no matter what.

Now, if you believe Skip could prevent players from going into slumps, than I'll have to disagree with that wholeheartedly. He would be a very, very rich man if he could perfom that miracle.

My post about Turtle was just to show how absurd it is to blame Smoke for the hitting woes, as many here have done, without mentioning that Turtle bears at least as much of the blame. However, I do think he needs to take much of the blame when it comes to recruiting, especially pitchers. We've lost too many to the major leagues and it seems like we haven't been very good at judging which ones of the second tier of pitchers we should be offering.

I'm no baseball guru, but I do believe this:

The baseball programs that consistently challenge for CWS championships in the future will demonstrate a solid mastery of baseball fundamentals on both offense and defense.
