My fault sorry, I forgot about that, but thats kinda my point its been a long time and recruits would have been 3 yrs old and would not have watched that game and remember the greatness of the programs that dominated the 80's and early 90's, so that really becomes insignificant.
Here's where you are missing a valid point. While a recruit may not know the tradition of the school they are visiting, by the time they leave they understand all too well. While a kid may not be real familiar with Coach Bryant, they do know who he is. I will lay bottom dollar on the fact his parents know, and know well. And, while your comment about launching an NFL career is true in some cases, it's not true in all cases. If I may add, in the last 30 years Alabama has won 3 NC's.
The kids who change programs, like Peyton Manning, Reggie Bush or McKnight go where their skills are needed and can win. Peyton didn't go to Ole Miss or LSU he went to Tennessee because he knew that was his best shot at a NC. I was wrong about Bama, sorry again, I'm 21 i wasn't alive and hate Bama so I don't give a **** about their history. Sure the three or two star kids who have no future football careers go to ancient prestige schools because it is a side prize because they couldn't go to the current power houses and be in contention at the end of the year. I want the top talent coming to LSU because they want to win, thats Prestige not ancient history. History is for the people without success who are looking back at the good ole days.
Change programs? What do you mean? Peyton went to UT because of Cutcliffe. Period. If you don't give a **** about history, remember this. It repeats itself. Other than those few thoughts, you might want to learn a bit about what makes kids attend schools. Based on this post, it certainly appears, you don't understand their thought processes. I've seen the players who have visited, seen the tradition, and were in awe of it. If you think it has little play in decisions, you couldn't be more wrong. Prestige is equivalent to relevance. The notion Bama isn't relevant is a notion coming from an opinion that is uniformed. No offense intended...but you are way off base with your opinion. IF I may add, there are posters on forums I'm registered at and post that say things that lead me to not respond to them at all. While it may not matter to you, your position on that list is gaining momentum.
Which is one big reason why the irish with a record 9 consecutive bowl losses continue to be successful recruiting and at this moment have the top rated recruiting class so far this year. Charlie isn't that charming.
5 seasons up to and including '90 ('86-'90) College World Series 4 times (2- 3rd place, 1 -4th, and 1- 5th) 8 future Major Leaguers 5 Seasons up to and including '07 ('03-'07) College World Series Twice (2 and done both times) Too early to realy judge big leaguers, but Aaron Hill is the only name I can come up with from this era making Contributions right now.
Kids attend schools for playing time, coaches, prestige (which is what this thread is basically trying to determine. Is it history, relevance or success), location, and coaching philosophy. I'm not saying traditon doesn't play a hand in landing recruits, but their is a reason that teams change coaches and philosphies when they are playing bad, because those are huge factors and with their success brings success for the program with more prestige and with that more top flight players. If history was a huge part of recruiting, why has Bama sucked for the past 15 years, with your great history you should have had the best players in the country at your school by your knowledge. I just want to know who wants to play for a losing team even if Bear Bryant once coached there. If you are from Alabama and grew up a Tide fan sure, but how do you get the kids from FLA or TX who don't care about your traditions, because their parents were gator or long horn fans. Bama has been irrelevant for a while and maybe Saban can turn it around but accept it.
They are going to ND because they believe in the new coach and his system, how much recruiting did the past few coaches do. Coaching is part of your recent success and your current prestige
