Weren't given the chance? I wasn't at the game, so clarify this for me. Was it tied to some song from the band?
I believe he's saying that the Wizard of Oz guard chant thing (not quite sure of the name; "Ohhhh weeee ohhhh") that the band normally plays after kicking the extra point wasn't played. *sigh* First Tiger Rag gets ruined and now this.
If it happens everywhere (and I find that hard to believe), its because not enough people get outraged and take a stand against it. And its a long-time problem at LSU. Never will forget the time an Advocate columnist complained about the language at a basketball game. The student section showed up for the next game wearing gags. I guess they were trying to say,"we're not intelligent enough to come up with creative cheers without cursing." And I'm sure the team wondered why it was so quiet in the student section all night. It was pathetic and embarassing then (had to be 15 years ago), and its pathetic and embarassing now. And it will never change until more people decide they're not going to just "get over it."
Would anyone care to point out to me which school has a "classy" student section??? IMO, the type of cheers/jeers that we have come to dislike are ones in which, at some point in our addolescent past, thought were either funny or said them ourselves.
The aggies are very classy. Went to a game last year and there is absolutely no cursing at all. no yelling at refs or anything. not as uncommon as you might think.
I would cry if we could have a student section ANYTHING like Penn State's. Honestly, I would cry on a camera and post the video online for all the world to see. (It'd be a good manly cry too.) They have the classiest, most organized student section in the nation.
Let me say, that when I was in the Band in undergrad, I was amazed at some of the creativity of our student section. I was proud when something would go bad and we would chant LSU or when something went good. I am a grad student now. When the Cocks got added to the end of the cheer today, I'll admit i thought it was funny at first but then I don't chant the You suck or what was added today. But once it got really loud, I was a little embarrassed that it might get on TV and very glad that the Band Department staff stopped the cheer for the game. I hope they don't stop it over all but if its what has to be done then so be it. I can tell you when the F Spurrier cheer started, I was truly embarrassed to be a student and sitting in the student section today. I was discussing with another former band member how bad that made us look and it was all cought on TV as that was during a play being challenged. I wish it could be different but I don't think it will. Truly ashamed today with the representation of our student section.:dis: :dis: :dis:
There is a bigger problem in this and I cant comment on that it happens everywhere but I would put money on 75% of colleges have this going on in its student section. Has anyone noticed the link between the lack of self respect in younger generations and the decline of life in the Greatest Generation. (this is a topic for another thread) I for one have a problem with cursing, I admit it and not trying to make an excuse but I picked it up from working in the motorpool. But this is a problem that is not just in the stadium in the student section, it is a growing trend over the campus during peak tailgating hours. We had a pack walk up and start cursing at the Gamecock Pinata we had hanging in the tree. To curse at a person is one thing, to curse at an object while working/fixing/putting together/watching sports is one thing, to start cursing an object that you have to go out of your way to get to it you might have a problem. But what can you really do about it? You can take a stand but with a drunken student it is sure to turn into something more then a talking too, and then you find yourself in the wrong because I dont see many judges oking physical violence because of someones language. This is a different animal all together, I remember when the "cup throwing" was a HUGE ordeal, that was something that could be fixed by beefing up security that is something that has pretty much faded into LSU lore. But how does someone police speech? And I say this not in agreement to the practice but what really can be done. As corney and after school special as this sounds it has to come from the students themselves, the students have to start taking a stand and not allow themselves to "just go along with it." I will tell you this if the behavior by the students around campus during tailgating does not stop this downward spiral it seems to be in, we may be witness to some drastic changes that will effect all of us and the way we tailgate. If anyone can come up with a way to stop it, Count me in to bring the big guns!
