Gunter hospitalized but 'responding to antibiotics'

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Former LSU women's basketball coach Sue Gunter was in the hospital Tuesday, suffering from pneumonia, members of the team's coaching staff said.

"The doctor tells me she is responding to the antibiotics. She's sedated and resting comfortably," Pokey Chatman, Gunter's successor as head coach, said Tuesday afternoon.

It was uncertain how long Gunter, who is in her 60s, would be hospitalized. She has emphysema and has suffered from respiratory problems for years. Ill health forced her to sit out part of last season, leaving Chatman, then an assistant, to lead the team to the Final Four.

Gunter is unable to breathe adequately on her own and is requiring the assistance of a mechanical ventilator, according to Dr. James Osterberger.

Osterberger said she is expected to remain on the breathing machine for at least several more days, and no significant change in her condition is expected before then.

"Coach Gunter is fighting her illness with the same determination, tenacity and courage which have characterized her Hall of Fame career," Osterberger said.
