I had a bit of an epiphany today talking to a coworker who is an Aggie. His first remark (good-natured) was "How on earth did you guys manage to sneak into the championship?" After a little discussion of the CFB season, he made the comment he had kind of hoped for the Mizzou/WV matchup, just to see some "new blood" in the championship game. "Instead", he said, "we got two powerhouses like Ohio St. and LSU." It finally hit me that to many college football fans out there, we have become a "powerhouse" in the mold of OSU, Michigan, USC. We've said it many times on the board this year, but it really is a great time to be a tigah!! :crystal: :crystal: :crystal:
It's human nature to hate the guys on top of the pile... Dig in, it's gonna be a long bowl season, then off-season... They'll be slinging hate at us the whole time.
Besides #1 Ohio State, there are only two teams in Div 1 college football that have less than 2 losses: Hawaii (12-0) and Kansas (11-1). I doubt that too many of your co-workers think that either of these two teams deserves to be in the NC. Besides #2 LSU, there are 9 times that have only two losses: Virginia Tech (11-2), Missouri (11-2), Oklahoma (11-2), BYU (10-2), West Virginia (10-2), Arizona State (10-2), Southern Cal (10-2), Boise State (10-2) and Georgia (10-2). You can argue back and forth over which of these two-loss teams is the best, but the simple fact of the matter is that LSU is the only one of those teams that didn't lose in regulation. Both of LSU's losses came in OT. Back in the day before OT, LSU would be 11-0-2 right now and would be the obvious choice for the #2 spot. That's what most of the voters (who grew up back in the day before OT) were thinking. It was just like in 2003 when both LSU and USC finished the bowl season as the top two teams in the country. Both teams had one loss, but USC's only loss came in OT, while LSU's loss didn't. So back in the day before OT, USC would have finished undefeated with a tie, while LSU would have finished with one loss. That's why the AP put USC at #1 in the final poll that year and LSU at #2. Explain it to your co-workers like that.
I've always thought of LSU as a football power. I was shocked to learn early on one of the Buckeye boards (from an LSU'er) that ya'll had 6 losing seasons in the 90's or something like that? Must have had my Big Ten blinders on to miss that one because I've always thought of LSU as one of the powers of the SEC. If the winning ways continue be prepared for some serious national hate. Mark May hates the Buckeyes because he can't get over a 70-0 (or close to it) pasting several years back. Every opponents biggest game of the year (regular season) is the Ohio State game. Bullseye on the back every time out. USC is already spouting about the "pummeling" they plan to give the Bucks next September.
In Pat Forde's article, he was saying something to the same effect about seeing Mizzou and WV, but he said now we get two bluebloods. Yes, I think we have definitely reached the upper echelons of college football, and everyone has taken notice. Plus, with our new LSU guy, we're here to stay!
I agree. The better you are the more the people underneath you are going to start drinking the haterade. There are a lot of quality programs in the country. but when you start consistently finishing in the top 5 year after year after year, jealousy rears its fugly head. :helmet::crystal::helmet::crystal:
Two undefeated in '98 No Problem Two undefeated in '99 No Problem There was hate for Florida State in '00 (Miami with 1 loss) There was hate for Nebraska in '01 (Oregon with 1 loss won conference) Two undefeated in '02 No Problem There was hate for Oklahoma in '03 (USC won their conference) There was hate for Oklahoma and USC '04 (Auburn Left Out) Two undefeated in '05 No Problem There was hate for Florida in '06 (Michigan no rematch) Moral of this story... unless there are two unbeatens, or an unbeaten and one 1 loss team... there will be hatred by he who is left out.
Hey neighbor. I think about half of Katy is from LA. The Aggie fans dominate college sports here except for the LSU fans, so I expected the negativity. However, the LSU fans aint skeered to show Tiger Pride, so there is going to be a sea of purple and gold around here until the game. :geauxtige :crystal: :tigereye:  Just wear your LSU gear and watch 'em squirm.
i agree, but let me add to that. the two teams playing for the NC are not playing great ball. i know cfb is a different beast, but the fans may not get a good product. uga, usc and ou are playing good ball. a playoff would ensure the NC is between teams playing great ball.
How typically Buckeye of you. I suppose the little sisters of the state of Ohio (Youngstown St, Akron, and Kent St) probably DID find you to be the game of THEIR year. USC is chomping at the bit for several reasons and it has little to do with a bullseye. Our two teams have had a long past dating back to the 1955 Rose Bowl. USC holds a 4-3 lead but 1980 is my favorite win. 18-17, Charlie White breaks a RB record with 247 yards and the Bucks are knocked out of the NC. I think USC believes that the intentional scheduling of cupcakes in order to get yourself into the NC game may be within the rules but hardly equates to smashmouth football. We are also playing AT Virginia to open the season. That's a game we won't be overlooking just to get to you. USC is tired of playing Michigan. USC doesn't like sweater vests. We haven't met in a RB since 1985. Don't you miss us?
