Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism.

We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people.

Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence.

Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.

Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family.

It can be both. He may be by definition in serious condition post-surgery for an abdominal gun shot wound, but stable since they hopefully got any bleeding under control and removed any traumatized tissue. After a few days, his condition may be upgraded, if he remains stable and some healing has occurred.

Tahj Jones doing much better after second surgery

BATON ROUGE – Wounded former LSU linebacker Tahj Jones of Sulphur is not all the way back, but he leapt toward that during a second surgery late Sunday afternoon for a gunshot wound in his abdomen suffered Friday night.

"Tahj is doing much better," childhood friend Shane Hanchey told Gannett Louisiana by phone Sunday night. "It was bad Saturday. He's really fortunate. He made a big progression in this surgery from what the doctors told me today. They removed the bullet. An artery that was damaged is back in place. They're not going to have to put a plate in his hip, where the bullet ended up. He is all sewed up, and he is not expected to have any more surgeries."

Hanchey has known Jones, his four siblings and his adoptive parents, Mark and Pam Swinney, since junior high in Sulphur when Tahj's natural mother died. Hanchey and Jones went to Sulphur High School together.

A spokesperson at Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, where Jones had both surgeries, said Jones remained in serious condition Sunday night.

"I was really worried he wasn't going to be with us," said Hanchey, a professional rodeo cowboy who was in Las Vegas on Saturday for a rodeo event before immediately flying home to Sulphur when he heard of Jones being shot. "He's going to be in the hospital for another couple of weeks, but the worst is over. At first, they thought he'd have more surgeries, but they said he's done."

Jones, 24, was shot in the abdomen shortly before midnight Friday in Sulphur allegedly by Brandon Winey, another former LSU football player, at the apartment of a female acquaintance of both, according to Sulphur Police. Jones and Winey got into an argument when Winey arrived at the female's apartment after Jones.

Winey, 36, was arrested on Saturday at his residence in nearby Lake Charles and charged with one count of second degree attempted murder. He is in jail in Sulphur with a bond set at $1 million by District Judge David Ritchie.

Jones, who finished his college football career at LSU last season, was taken to West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital in Sulphur by the female after Winey had fled the scene, Sulphur Police said.

"I was told he walked into the emergency room and pulled up his shirt to show where he got shot," Hanchey said.

Jones was then taken by ambulance to Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria – a 90-minute drive at normal speed - and arrived there between 2 and 3 a.m. and had his first surgery at about 4 a.m. Saturday, Hanchey said.

"The bullet went in his abdomen below the left rib cage and ended up in his right hip," Hanchey said. "He could've died. I'm feeling good about it for the first time. If everything goes well Monday, they said they were going to take him off his ventilator."

Jones participated in LSU's Pro Day last Wednesday with more than a dozen other NFL prospects from LSU. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.54 seconds, which was the same as one of tailback Jeremy Hill's 40 runs and better than one of wide receiver Jarvis Landry's.

Shortly after Pro Day, the St. Louis Rams and Washington Redskins contacted LSU about Jones, who was not expected to be drafted but could have made a team for his special teams play.

The Rams contacted LSU again Saturday upon hearing that Jones had been shot.
