Back when I was a young lad, 1962, I finished US Navy Boot Camp in San Diego, California. I boarded a Greyhound Bus and rode to Winnsboro, Louisiana. I spent a week with my folks then boarded another Greyhound and rode back to San Fransisco. It was a loooong grungy trip. My strongest memory was getting to San Francisco on Thanksgiving day. I was surprised and amazed that the huge bus terminal was wall to wall with Bums. If you want to be PC, homeless people. There was no place to sit because the Bums had all the seats. I remember their topic of conversation was some nice person who was going to feed them Thanksgiving dinner.

If anyone is going in an RV, I posted this in another thread but in case you missed it:

Oh, there is a golf course nearby if you go in early and like to golf.

Fly into some place close, like Vegas, get a car and drive the rest of the way. You can probably get a reasonable fare to Vegas at that time of year, but room rates will be nuts, unless you stay at State Line or Laughlin. Don't laugh, they are viable alternatives. Then you can just take the 15 in from there and be done with it. I think you'll save money by flying into a place like Vegas or PHX and getting a car and driving the rest of the way. Just a thought. You could also fly into a ****bag town like Sacramento or Reno and do the same thing. Make it work for you, not against you.

    how about Amtrak ?

the Sunset Limited is a straight shot from NOL to Los Angeles (LAX -Grand Central station) and is ususally about a 35-40 hour trip.

A few years back, I regularly rode Amtrak between Orlando and Wash DC and found it to be a pleasant, affordable experience. Get the mini sleeper car option, it's worth every penny of the added cost, particularly if you have a g/f or spose traveling with you. Diner car, Lounge car, great views ....

    about $300-$400 round trip :thumb:

Airfare to LA is going to run $600-$800 per person or so.

You can get a flight on Allegiant Air out of Shreveport, LA to Vegas for $340 round trip Dec 30 - Jan 2. Allegiant only flies to vegas and we have the flights here in shreveport due to our many casinos.

    Just a little helpful info.
