Agree. My first point on this thread was about how Augie recruits. He demands good defense and craves speed. His bunting strategy is consistent and his preference for it is well known. As he says, "I'd bunt Babe Ruth." Who figures a .250ish hitter is gonna go to Omaha, bat .500 with a couple of dingers and win the MVP ? Guess that's why they play 'em.

actually Maroul was their best postseason hitter before this year. Harold Reynolds nailed it when talking about he was the steal of the draft at 6'1 215 in the 23rd round with great power, as he hit the homerun 1 second after it came out his mouth.

mlb draft has so many people you could pretty much say that about anyone but he may be right about this guy.

did you see augie's postgame interview? first thing he said was he needed a SS for next year when they asked what he would take from this moment.

...admitting that he was using this as his sale's pitch. kinda tacky but probably effective.

Have watched Texas on TV and in person all year. Maroul is just incredibly good in the hot corner. He's had problems with average during his UT career but he's a gamer when the big ones are on the line. I thought Augie's remark about needing a shortstop was classic. Was on the access road in front of Disch-Falk this afternoon as they were having their welcome home celebration. Looking into the stadium, looked like a pretty good crowd, couple thousand I'd guess.

Funny to watch the fans development in their tolerance of Augie over the years. Gustafson was a god here. And he was dismissed in a pretty shoddy way in the minds of many. Lots of bad feelings for Augie to overcome, not to mention that the cupboard was bare. His first few years here, talk radio every afternoon was all about how to run him off, how he didn't fit, etc. Everybody's on the bandwagon now. Imagine that. :yelwink2:

winning cures everything and Smoke needs to win next year to save his job I assume. Postseason wins but next year it ain't happenin' so he has a serious uphill climb.

Texas bare? surely that's relative when speaking in those terms. that team ain't never been lacking too much. except a football coach.

Word on the 40 acres was that Gus just didn't recruit his last several years. Yep, he'd get some kids to come just because they wanted to come to UT but the criticism, justified or not, that I heard was that he just simply didn't like to leave Austin for any reason. The man must've hated to travel. Just wouldn't play an OOC away game if at all possible. His last years were pretty average as I remember. I really liked Coach Gus. Followed his teams before LSU was competitive cause they were the closest (geographically) team to where I lived in Louisiana that was nationally competitive way back then.

I had to like Gus. He loves peanut butter. :yelwink2:

texas recruited itself. hell skip never left town either. well not for that anyhow. :hihi: :hihi:

Kinda the same stuff you hear for all coaches on their way out, especially if losing. People say that all the time about spurrier on his departure but truth is there's no way of knowing and likely a myth.

Agree. SS cost us a few games this year.

A consistent theme here has been:

    1. Our cupboard is bare next year and we will struggle, and..
    2. Smoke has to win next year to keep his job.

Given #1, does #2 include reaching the CWS?

If our experience and talent level is indeed down next year, then I would not expect Smoke's job to depend on winning a championship next year . . . not even a SEC West championship.

I think that Smoke's our coach until at least after the 2007 season.
