The Ryan Express not only had the perfect mechanics to pitch the way he did but to also put the least amount of stress on his arm and shoulder. Another major factor was that Ryan never pitched more than 200 innings in any season before he reached the age of 25, so by the time he started pitching 250 and 300 inning seasons his body had fully matured.

Roger Clemens was another power pitcher who never incurred major injury to his arm but steroids aside he was a workout freak.

But you're right about most of today's pitchers being big pussies. With all the nutritional advantages and personal trainer and sports psychologists combined with a year round fitness regimen to keep them in tip top shape the whole lot of them don't add up to one Bob Gibson or Sandy Koufax. How in the hell did Cy Young win 511 games? Forget Joe DiMaggio and 56. That could be broken. Cy Young' s record will stand forevforever.

Babe Ruth is probably one of them. He trained on beer and hotdogs

Yeah I read 2 books Ryan wrote and many of the old school guys talk how they just don't throw enough nowadays. That's a big reason their endurance is down and the injuries are prevalent. I've aways believed that. 100 pitches is an arbitrary number and everyone is different. And now it's ingrained in our heads the guys arm will fall off if he goes further. It's simply not true.

But with agents and misinformation they are always going to err on the side of caution now. There's no going back. Specialization takes care of that. Setup guys middle relievers closers make sure of it. There's too much pressure on a manager to do anything differently even if he believes otherwise.

“It’s because pitchers simply don’t throw as much as we did,” Ryan replied, matter-of-factly. “That’s the real issue here. When I pitched, we pitched every fourth day and guys would pitch 300 innings and it wasn’t considered a big deal. If you don’t get on the mound and develop stamina, you’re risking injury. This whole thing with the 100-pitch count limit — I have a real problem with that. Pitchers are all different and when you put standard limitations on them, you’re not utilizing their talent.”

If I had known I could fool myself into thinking I had an extra day off I would have been doing it since forever.
