Very true. The only bright spot for Bama after Bryant & before Saban, was cheatin' Gene Stallings, who won the 1992 NC. But he got sanctioned for '93 & '95 I think

He was one of the nicest and most honorable guys you ever want to meet. Didn't have a racist bone in his body was just a genuine and honest guy. Met him through a friend of mine. Players loved him but he was probably too nice to be a good coach and he wasn't.
