1. Washington was the most fortified city on Earth at that point. Lee wouldn't have gotten within 20 miles of the city. Had Lee won at Gettysburg, he would have had to retreat back into the South anyway because his supply lines were stretched too thin.
  2. The threat would have been enough for peace offering. It is why lee went to Gettysburg.
  3. Correct. The CSA never had a prayer of beating the north, which had most of the people and virtually all the industrial might of the continent. It could only hope to gain a truce, and acceptance.

  4. Newt Gingrich wrote an alternate history just about that. Very interesting as Lee goes on to take Baltimore thinking it would adhere to the southern cause.
Lincoln calls Grant in and the climatic battle is fought 2 years early. Lee’s army is exhausted and Grant wins restoring the Union.
Fascinating book with explanations of why Newt decided to choose that outcome.

  5. I read his "Gettysburg", but not the follow-up. Guess I don't have to now.

  6. Love this movie. I watched it on https://tubitv.com/ just the other night. First time I saw it was on my birthday while in Pensacola. The same day I went to the National Naval Aviation Museum and saw The Final Countdown.

  8. Its about the journey, not the destination.
  9. Don't be; I never looked for it. Not a huge fan of the first one, basically because, Newt just imagined a situation where Lee listened to Longstreet's advice to pull out of G'burg. Then he imagined the battle taking place somewhere else and unfolding exactly as it did in real life, but with the South holding the high ground and the North executing the suicidal charge. Not very creative.
  10. I would go with Jeb not dicking around on the move into the North.
