Lee was a human torturer, a traitor to his country, and not very good at generalling, either. The ONLY reason to memorialize him in New Orleans was as a statement that the Confederate cause was just. It wasn't. It was New Orleans's moral duty to clean its sin.

The net result of his stupid move, aside from the enormous casualties he took, was to resolve the determination of Northerners to win.
