well, addai broke open a 52-yd run on the opening play. i only stayed about half the time, but it's really hard to guage the effectiveness of the running game when the plays don't make actual progress down the field. the plays that i saw they would run and just start back over from the same spot. they moved to the south end zone for some strange reason a little later on. everybody was seated in the north EZ and couldnt see crap. anyway, from what i did see, there were plenty of good runs that you would take any day in a real game situation. i guess its just that you see more spectacular plays with the passing game anyway. so just seeing them one at a time, rather than over the entirety of a game, allows you a better measure of its effectiveness.
I don't mind, I was much more concerned about our run defense than our run offense. The lack of a running game was a positive sign in my eyes. The running game will be fine, don't worry.
I wasnt there but from what I take from the numbers and opinions, Russell acted like the starting qb and Flynn was attempting to be? my opinion on the spring game/scrimmage: not as fun to watch, but more effective for the coaches. so basically its like, 'hey do you want whats best for the team, or do you want a preview to the show' I kinda saw it as a backstage pass to the show myself... a put together dress rehearsal if you will... I think this team will be just fine... did everyone see the smiles on their faces? these kids are having fun out there...and i think thats what matters overall...:thumb:
The only thing about this run is it was the #1 o against the #2 d and also the first play. MF could have run to Lafayette on a naked bootloeg but by that time I was so bored I don't remember what d was in. However it is in one of bretts pics. As far the rest of the game it always looked like they couldgrind out 3 or so but nothing sexy. May have been the format. People are talking about the passsing game more because it is a little more exciting. (and believe me they were looking for something exciting) It also had the most room for improvement. IMO The improvement here may also be a little related to the play of the line.
But, I wasn't. Next time I'll rephrase my question with the appropriate flowery language so as not to offend any sensitive souls.
I don't know if you were paying attentiont, but Shyrone Carey was owning everybody the whole practice, whether it was cathcing a pass in the flat or just running it in in the endzone(Off the top of my head, it was about 3 TD's in the redzone O). I thought Vincent looked good running and catching. Addai really shined too, especially pounding the ball. Broussard was ok, but it's one damn practice. You know who was really fun to watch was a walkon Donnie Chaucer. Did anyone else notice this guy? He is really quick and he had like a 40yard TD run. He may be able to contribute to the team a lot with that kind of speed. I think Les called for at least 3 end arounds, so I guess he likes the trick stuff.
The problem with these spring scrimmages is that it's a no-win situation. Seriously. It's either the offense that has a good game, or the defense--but never both..... and that's good. If the offense has a good day, it's: "O looked great--defense sucked." or vice-versa. If BOTH units had a good scrimmage than that wouldn't be too well for the team as a whole because that would indicate that both units are erratic. It's really hard to judge how good you are when playing vs yourself, IMO. I also think it's better if the "scrimmage" is more of an actual game like other schools do. Granted, I know this might NOT be the best of examples , but I had a friend at UL-L that played and their spring scrimmage was 1st team offense and 2nd team defense vs 2nd team offense and first team defense. Winning team got a steak dinner and the losing team ate beans. I think a situation like that offers a little better product for the fans to watch.
Hold the freaking phone...you have friends at UL-L? Neg Rep Points! J/K! True, but I think CLM doesnt really care about giving a show right now... I thinks he's actually focused on winning ball games anddoing whats best forthe team, rather than just entertaining fans for a routine spring game scrim... IMHO
Yea but I think I read the 2nd team return unit blocked the punt of the 1st team punt unit. That is not very encouraging for the punting unit, but good to hear everyone is getting some positive playing experience.
