    More on Maineri

now ranking 22nd among active Division I coaches with 864 career victories on the collegiate level

nation's fourth-best winning percentage during the decade of the 2000s (.728; 324-120-3), trailing only Rice (.752), Oral Roberts (.737) and Florida State (.734).

The 2006 squad ranked among the national top-30 in all three major categories (batting avg., ERA and fielding pct.)

Dame was the only Division I baseball program to produce Academic All-Americans each year from 2000-04, with two honored every season from 2000-03.

"Notre Dame is professional baseball's dream program. When you come to see Notre Dame play as a scout or front-office person, you're going to get the right kind of player, the kind who run the balls out and play hard all the time. And you don't find that very often. Notre Dame is now loaded with prospects and that's a credit to Paul and his staff." - Jim Hendry (Chicago Cubs General Manager)

How can anybody seriously complain about this guy before he ever coaches a game. No he wouldn't have been my first choice, but the more I read about him, the more I like him. This may be one of the best hires we could have ever dreamed of.

(we've won like 50 championships, nothing since the guy left, and credit all of that to Xavier, the one man team who was recruited by Saban)

I can see you know nothing about the track program at all. Henry left the women's program bare, with darn near all of the NCAA scorers all ending their eligibilty at the same time the fall before last. Shaver has brought in great recruits and the program is still one of the tops 5 in the nation, just like it has always been and will continue to be. XC didn't win any of those relays by himself and we also had the fastest times when he didn't run. Even even lost some of the lead he was handed in the 400 relay final.

(Should have been finished months ago)

Yep, we should open the checkbook and give him Everything he wanted, no negotiations should be done. Do you run a company, if so can I get a job?

(he was offered 2 to 3 NFL jobs before taking LSU's)

    Total BS

(if the guy is so respected, why has he never been mentioned before? That's all I'm saying. And of course no other top coaches will come unless you entice them, and we didn't nothing to do so. Probably tried to negotiate camp money during interviews.)

You're basing how good or respected a coach is by how many times he has been listed on a message board? Did nothing to entice any of the coaches? And how many of the interviews did you sit in one, and exactly how many of those other coaches were actually offered contracts?

I see nothing wrong with Mainieri. I like what I hear about his enthusiasm and his relationship with his players. I'm just wondering who else some of you think we should have hired. Doesn't look like too many people wanted the pressure. If this guy chose to take it on I respect the hell out of him for that.

As for football...last years record could be a fluke or we may be in for one hell of a great ride. We can still be patient and see what happens. Miles won't win any speaking awards but if he gets the job done on the field I don't care if he draws up plays with crayons.

can you please tell me what "sorry ass hires" bertman has made. I cant think of any except for smoke and i think he only recomened him. And last i checked all athletics except for baseball are at as high levels as they have ever been, and we have takin care of the baseball problem. Football went 11-2 Basketball went to the final four in both men and women, Track number 2 in the nation. you dont have a clue what your talkin about and are makin yourself look very stupid. DO YOU SELF A FAVOR AND KEEP YOUR POST TO A MIN.

saban was definitely offered the HC job of the colts prior to accepting the LSU position. that's a well-known fact. so while I don't know of any other NFL job offers he received prior to LSU, that makes his post anything other than "total BS". At most he fudged the "2-3" comment.

In his defense, he didn't say "on a message board". He simply said "mentioned". And he's correct, in newspaper articles and other media, Mainieri was indeed not mentioned until it was a forgone conclusion he had the job.

Besides, it's been reported in this town by several talk show hosts that the interviews were just a sham and Bertman really wanted to take over the job, but was blocked by O'Keefe. What do you say to those hosts? Are they a joke too?

how can you say that Bertman wasn't gonna get his old job back, he was setting up assistants left and right. He didn't want to lose his paycheck, only after a lot of complaining by fans, etc. did he realize he couldn't come back. Why else would he have advertised the interviews so much?, just doing that to show that "i did interviews and didnt' come up with any viable candidates". Well you gott offer someone something extra to come here, not a lateral pay move like Miles took. No wonder no one wanted this top job.

Bertman didn't hire Brady, only a baseball coach that sucked.

Saban built the FB program, anyone could have run that team with the talent and schedule it had last year. Barring the Peach Bowl, no strong performances other than the Alabama game.

He did hire a track coach, who hasn't won since when taking over the top 2 or 3 teams in the nation. I guess this new guy is better than Pat Henry?

and we'll see how Pokey turns out after Semoine is gone.

Bertman came out & said that our new coach was at the top of his list from the start. Maybe instead of the conspiracy theory that the interviews were so public for Bertman himself to come back, they were public so that Bertman could go after the guy he really wanted.
