Rep. Kennedy blames medication for crash near Capitol

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rep. Patrick Kennedy, son of Sen. Ted Kennedy, said Thursday he was apparently disoriented by medication when he crashed his car into a barricade on Capitol Hill overnight.

Rep. Kennedy said in a written statement late Thursday after media reports of the incident emerged that he had returned home after the final House votes around midnight Wednesday and taken "the prescribed amount" of sleep aid Ambien and an anti-nausea drug.

"Sometime around 2:45 a.m., I drove the few blocks to the Capitol complex believing I needed to vote," he said. "Apparently, I was disoriented from the medication."

The two officials said officers at the scene reported seeing the car swerve before the crash and said Kennedy appeared intoxicated.

There was no indication from the sources that a sobriety test was given or that an arrest was made.

WASHINGTON -U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy insisted yesterday that he had consumed “no alcohol” before he slammed his Mustang convertible into a concrete barrier near his office, but a hostess at a popular Capitol Hill watering hole told the Herald she saw him drinking in the hours before the crash.

Man, you people need to cut this guy some slack. He needed something to help wash the prescription medication down with. Scotch might have been the only thing available at the bar he stopped at. . .

Louis P. Cannon, president of the Washington chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, who was not on the scene, said the congressman had appeared intoxicated when he crashed.

Cannon said the officers who responded to the accident were instructed by an official "above the rank of patrolman" to take Kennedy home and no sobriety tests were conducted at the scene.

Sleeping medication and a couple drinks will do that to a man. Atleast nobody was hurt.

I know I'll get blasted for this but what the hell...
I wonder if people will treat him the way they did Rush Limbaugh.
We'll see just how far this goes...

Somehow I think they will overlook the rep Kennedy since he's one
of their own...

How do you know it was a bar?
Maybe he actually went by Ted's house and had a few drinks there

Caution: I wonder just how many votes the Kennedy's have cast while under the influence of .....

What a convenient excuse he has. One of the known side effects of taking ambien is sleep driving. Now we know why he didn't have this press conference yesterday ... he needed the extra 24 hours to discover this little fact.

He's a Kennedy, so he'll get off the hook by paying fines for the 3 citations.

I expect the media pressure will be greater on the capitol police and someone will lose his job.
