NEWARK, N.J. -- Alligator bags weren't the problem on an American Airlines jetliner that landed at Newark International Airport from Miami on Monday.

It was a live, 5-foot alligator that was captured inside the baggage compartment after escaping from its crate.

    No one was injured.

The Port Authority police emergency services unit used a closing-loop device to capture the gator.

A Port Authority spokesman said the owner was on board the flight. He didn't release names and doesn't know why the alligator was being taken to Newark.
