I have a feeling he's going with Saban. Maybe not as DC, but in some defensive capacity.

IMO Del Rio is a mistake. We have no clue what kind of recruiter he will be and his accomplishments in the NFL aren't sufficient to have playes come flocking to him. Not only don't I think he would come, but I don't think he's the best we can get.

But THIS GUY never won the crytal football and I'll bet he wants one. [IMG]

Hopefully Skip has been doing his homework

I've always been impressed w/ Bertman, not only as a baseball coach but as an AD. He surely knows how important a hire this is. I don't think he will go cheap. The temptation -- and I admit I am as susceptible to it as any other Tiger fan -- is to hire a "name." I don't have a problem hiring a big name if he is a good fit. Two big names that I think are possibilities are Butch Davis and Dennis Erickson. Hiring either one of them is tempting on its surface, but, I'm wondering if a better fit is out there with a younger guy. I just don't see the timing working out with regards to NFL coaches. I think it will come down to Mike Riley, Rich Rodriguez, and perhaps this Les Myles guy, although I know very little about him and am skeptical. The Boise State coach should also be considered. Basically, with Saban we had the blueprint for the perfect coach --- dynamic, focused, motivated, great recruiter, relentless, defensive expert, with enough sense to hire a very good offensive coordinator (Fisher) that he had never coached w/ before, but knew by reputation. So, is there a guy out there who sees the big picture -- recruiting, facilities, academics, on the cutting edge of the offensive or defensive side of the ball, with enough sense to complete the package by hiring an innovator for the other side of the ball?

Is there a possibility that a darkhorse (such as Saban in 1999) will surface? Barry Alvarez? Mack Brown? Kirk Ferentz? John L. Smith? Glen Mason? Bill Snyder? Chuck Amato? :) :eek:ldskule: :champs:

Just say no to Mack Brown, even if he got us to the National Championship game, we might play OU and we know he can't beat them! :hihi:

I love that LSU pompous attitude that you could even have
a remote chance of getting Ferentz.
Of course we would be just as hopeful as you all if we were in your position.

    Be realistic

Jack Del Rio isn't going to leave Jacksonville for LSU. Jacksonville is a young team and will be very good for a long time especially when Byron Leftwich shows consistency. Realistically, I would like to see LSU hire one of the following:
    1) Norm Chow. Offensive genius. He has the track record at BYU and USC of developing quarterbacks. He is the best choice for LSU in my opinion.
    2) Butch Davis: Proven college head coach and very good recruiter. He has ties to Florida that would help in recruiting for the Tigers.
    3) Romeo Crennel. He is another Belichick disciple and a good defensive minded coach. The big problem with him is he would be linked to every NFL job like Saban
Long shot: Mike Shanahan. He reportedly is unhappy with the Broncos and has been linked to college jobs in the past ( U of Florida). He is known for his run block schemes and could do alot with LSU's O-Line.
