and 'Bama's 3rd ranked defense made no difference?? Give the Tide defense some credit too. We didn't exactly tear up the turf on those guys in the running game last year either.
"Years"? You make it sound like it took him forever. 2nd Year - SEC Champ, Sugar Bowl Champ 4th Year - :crystal: , SEC Champ IMHO, I think Saban had the same quality players as we have now but he just coached them correctly - something Dinardo did not do. Think about the talent we had on the 2001 team (players Saban fell into - in other words, didn't recruit) - Davey, Toefield, D. Davis, J. Reed, D. Henderson, Travis Daniels, M. Mauck, Lavalais, Jarvis Green, Trev Faulk, Bradie James. All of these guys are in the NFL. Saban inherited them for the most part. They just needed coaching to make them win. Miles is doing the same thing. He inherited players but he is still making them win. Granted, it is not pretty, but it is a win.
Hey guys, I'm usually lurking around reading what people have to say, but just felt the need to point out a couple of things. I'll admit, after the first couple of games in the season, I wasn't very happy with Miles as a head coach nor Pelini as a DC, but you cannot deny that we've gotten better. Over the last few weeks we've been cutting down on penalties (well, minus North Texas), and turnovers. I can't say I *like* close games, but winning is better then losing. As far as penalties go, lets see how we stacked up against some other teams previous to this game (stats taken from http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/natlRank.jsp?div=4&rpt=IA_teampenalties&site=org) #81 Notre Dame #85 Southern California #86 Miami #98 Texas #108 Florida #110 LSU Granted we're last, but its really not that much worse then what Carroll has done over at USC, or Meyer at Florida, and we're only getting better with today's performance (6 penalties I believe, which according to that chart is a respectable 34th). The averages per game for these teams ranges from 7.88 to 9.00, which is not that big of a difference. I don't think we're a great team yet, I don't think we're utilizing all of our weapons on offense. We're not flashy, I don't remember the last time we had a play over 50 yards long, but we get the job done, and thats all you can ask for in a team. Hopefully we can come together more as a unit (players and coaches alike), and begin driving down the field with more consistancy. Anyway, thanks for reading this long post -- back to lurking.
thats the point, instead of going after something they do well at (guard against the run), lets try and mix it up. ASU couldn't run the ball on us, but they shore tore up our secondary. Theres more than one way to "run the ball" claim many sports analysts. Screen passes/ wide receiver screens, slot passes, slants, outs, swing passes, shovel passes, QB draws, option, end arounds are all ways to "run" the ball. I just wish the tiger offense would cater to their opponent and have a formidable game plan instead of sticking to the same thing, week after week. Anyway, i'm off to bed gents - good night I hope i didn't offend you BostonBengal, we're on the same side you know, goodnight to you sir.
I'm not sorry for the disagreement of points, but I do appologize for the childish name calling. In terms of the running game/ # of running plays we attempted, I feel that we were having success throwing the ball and to insure that we continued that, we had to at least give the look that we were still dedicated to out-right running the ball. You're right, there are other ways to "run the ball" (screen passes, etc.), but screen passes don't hold up the linebackers and safeties like a play-action does. That's why I think we attempted the runs into the brick wall so much.
Once again............... Stop throwing out statistics..... Statistics are for Losers...!!!! Winning is the bottom line .............. 8 WINS ..... 1 LOSS ..... That is the ONLY Statistic that counts or matters.... GEAUX TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :geauxtige LSU! :bball: :crystal: ldskule: :helmet: :tigerhead
That's attributable to a known weakness we targeted early on. Unproven center, hammer up the line. Bama was smart enough to adapt their tools (i.e. Darby) to run some slants and even off-tackle draws where they had some success for one half of the game. Seems like we took control of that by holding back the corner and the tackles pretty effectively to guard the scrimmage-line and force them to throw into our much improved secondary...what's the problem?
:crystal: OK slappy, i'll give you some reasons. Let's talk about the Tennessee game. Not the obvious where he sat on a 21-0 lead in the beginning of the second half. But one moment at the end of the game. LSU had the ball with two minutes to go and decided to run the clock out instead of trying to win. Our defense was exhausted and had not stopped UT all second half. Gee that's smart. Now the moment I was talking about. When we punted to UT with 30 seconds left, on their first play Landry picks the ball off. Then you see Miles running down the sidelines yelling "TIMEOUT, TIMEOUT" It took a grad student to tell him that the clock stops on a change of possesion. That proved to me that he had no clue what was going on. now yesterday's game, he could have cost us a victory with his decisions late in the game. 3 FG attempts of 40 plus with the worst kicker in football. Hello, the opposing team gets the ball from where the ball is snapped. i wanted to go for it on 4th but a punt would've been better. Pin them down by their own endzone. we dominated the second half. their offense couldn't do sh*t the second half. Heck, the refs blew a holding call in their endzone on Wroten, who was tackled from behind, that should have been a safety. Now Im not comparing him to Saban, that's not fair to Miles. Hell I've given him the benefit of the doubt all year, but I can't no more.
