The Van driver was drunk and driving with a suspended license and has had 6 prior DWIs. THAT is incredible and inexcusable. Whay wasn't he locked up?
Why? Probably because the jails are "overcrowded" or because the sot had a "good" lawyer. Personally, I think a first-offense DWI/DUI should have a harder consequence. My scoutmaster's wife (this was back in the 80's) was murdered by a drunk driver who got a light sentence because the judge said "his family needed him". And her husband and three children didn't? And if his family needed him so much, why wasn't he home with them on that Friday night instead of out getting drunk? Sorry...this subject just sets me off.
DWI laws do need to be tougher. Just suspending the guys license obviously did not stop him from driving. Six times is crazy you are right he should have been sitting in jail somewhere.
