Just as USC would've done to LSU in '03. Makes you kind of lucky I guess you could say...works both ways dude. :dis:
Thank you! Exactly why we need a playoff so we don't have to listen to fortune tellers like Chef rant about what would've happened. :dis:
chris fowler spoke about it on the MIKE and MIKE show this morning. He attributed some of it to the tough loss Tubby took. They also mentioned Lou's national championship before the were done. they kinda laughed about it.
Taking aside whatever personal bias Tub may have, TV can most certainly have an effect on sports. Those sports having greater market share fare better on average. Yes, the teams and sports must deliver the results, but getting attention is half the battle. Those teams who receive attention rack up on sponsorship and advertising deals. The funding helps offset costs, and pays for things like buildings and coaches. If ESPN favors west coast teams, they do so because of the ratings and ad dollars it will generate. Unfortunately, it in turn will benefit those leagues and teams in ways they do not merit. Like it or not USC will get attention that an LSU or AU won't. Sure some teams and situations are exceptions. But look at the broad trends. Why else would the Chicago Cubs keep national prominence and attention over say, the Kansas City Royals. Take out the romance and tradition, the power of it is market share. Who speaks of the Lovable Losers in Seatle? Look at the widespread decline of hockey. The league can't generate interest beyond defined northern areas, and won't capture national TV audiences. Even the Olympics are suffering; with no East vs. West drama, the interest has declined. If you look over the broad horizon, sports, leagues, and teams who garner market share will grow stronger. If ESPN chats up teams the network believes more fans like, and in doing so boosts its own ratings, that will certainly spell trouble for college football.
Tuberville is about to be on the Dan Patrick Show on ESPN Radio. http://espnradio.espn.go.com/espnradio/index There's a link near the top to listen live. I'm thinking he'll try to smooth things over but we'll see.
