I agree with that last statement. What should have happened, imo, is for Saban to hold the NFL off until the season was over. If WH wanted him bad enough and had a signal from Saban, the Dolphins would have been content to wait until Jan. 2. to begin courting Saban. Saban could have said long ago that he is not interested in the NFL "right now" because he had a bowl game to focus on, etc.
The only reason I am upset is for the charade that was a press conference in November when he categorically denied being interested in that position. Who knows if we could have landed Spurrier or not (not sure if we had interest or vice versa) but I would have appreciated the chance to at least contemplate hiring him. Besides that, congrats on landing your dream job NS. You should have come clean in November.
C'mon guys, the timing was what it was! It just happened to be Christmas. That was probably because that was the first day the team would be together. I'm sure Saban wanted to personally relay his plans and explain his decision to all of his players. That is classy. I seriously, seriously, doubt it was anything intentional on Saban's part to get attention or anything of the sort. It could not be done after the Bowl game. Skip wanted it resolved before then. Would you all have wanted to wait another week, agonizing over what he would do? Those of you who say that Saban could have just told WH and the Dolphins to wait until after Jan. 1 to discuss the job are mistaken. WH was not going to wait. Saban was, obviously, his man from the start and was going to do whatever it took to get him. He was not going to risk losing Saban in any way. It could not have been done several days ago - by all accounts, Saban was turning down the Dolphins and they didn't convince him until WH pulled a Don Corlione (sp?) and just made him an offer he couldn't refuse! I do believe it was a very, very, difficult decision for NS and his family. The fact that it came down on Christmas, to me was actually good. For one thing, on this day, we are reminded of those things that are truly important - even more important than who will coach our favorite football team - family, togetherness, and the awesome love of our Savior, Jesus Christ, born on this day. I feel too good, due to the aforementioned, to be brought down much by losing Saban. Also, because I, personally, was spending so much time doing the family thing, I didn't have near as much time to perseverate on the NS/LSU coaching situation as I would have on a normal day. Like Nick, I hope all of the LSU family is having a wonderful holiday and a merry Christmas. We may no longer have one of the top three coaches, but I, for one, will continue to be thankful for the things that we do have.
