I should have said privately....USC had already been notified what was coming. I really can't imagine anyone half way decent who would have taken that job at that time. Lane was at least a known entity who had been there in 2003-4, worked under PC, and PC was lobbying for him. Ultimately, Mike Garrett arranged to close the deal before he handed the job off to Pat Haden.
I don't disagree with your sentiment, but I think Dak would have done what Marcus Randall accomplished and make a team on his physical gifts and football instincts alone -- just not at quarterback. Randall played a few seasons as a safety and linebacker for the Titans and excelled on special teams.
