Herm Edwards? ESPN's Shelly Smith reported he wants the USC job and ESPN's Chris Mortensen is saying USC going to take a look at him. Herm played college ball in California and got his first coaching job there. He also played a year for the Los Angeles Rams. There's also a lot of talk on the USC forums and even among sports blogs about Tony Dungy (played in California for the 49ers for a year) and Jon Gruden (coached at the NCAA level in California for a year, got his first NFL coachng job in California with the 49ers and got his first NFL head coaching job in California with the Raiders). I imagine it's because they are celebrities and people are used to Los Angeles being the home of celebrities.
I guess they see it as the program is stepping back. They may have made things worst for themselves. When the NCAA finishes with them they won't have their pick of coaches. They may settle for less than a coach of Del Rio's calibur. The only way they get a name coach now is if his head is stuck in the sand about the NCAA, or he is deperate to ge back into coaching. Their next coach is going to have to be their a while to prove his metal.
Honestly, I don't see what's so great about Jack Del Rio except that he's young. I can see why USC would want a more proven coach.
Actually, there are several threads on USC forums strongly arguing that they should get Mike Leach. Of course, other USC fans are arguing back with a "hell no" attitude.
whoever they get needs to have one big out clause in their contract. and that is if they get put on probation. if after hired usc gets put on probation because of something the previous coach did, they need to be able to get out if they want. just my opinion.
Mike Riley is out, he just agreed to a contact extension at Oregon State and is saying he plans to be there a long time. He was raised in Corvallis (his father was DC for Oregon State) and even led Corvallis High School to two state title games as their star QB. He's also been the head coach at Oregon State for 9 years now. The hot names today are Herm Edwards and Jack Del Rio. "[USC AD] Garrett called [Herm] Edwards after his first choice, Oregon State's Mike Riley, passed. Edwards was recommended by Syracuse AD Daryl Gross, who told Garrett about Carroll nine years ago. Edwards, who works now for ESPN, chuckled nervously when asked about the job Monday." COLLEGE FOOTBALL / New challenge for Carroll, and USC As for Del Rio, here is the video clip of his response to the news he got a contract offer from USC. He makes it looks like he's excited to get the chance to coach his alma mater, but that he has to keep up the appearance that he intends to stay at Jacksonville so that he can force Jacksonville's hand (if he quits the Jacksonville job, then he doesn't get the $15 million buyout that would come to him if he gets fired by Jacksonville). Del Rio plays poker with the Jacksonville media | ProFootballTalk.com Del Rio...is currently locked in a game of chicken with Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver over his status for next season. If Weaver terminates him, he will be owed a $15 million buyout. However, given that exorbitant amount of money, a full buyout is unlikely. Perhaps the two will come to terms on some sort of a settlement that will allow Del Rio to take the job as the new Trojans head coach. Report: USC Offers Jack Del Rio the Job, He Denies It [the news that USC has offered Del Rio a contract] sets up a Play Now-style showdown in Jacksonville, with owner Wayne Weaver likely preferring to get rid of Del Rio at the lowest possible cost. So Weaver could play hardball, telling Del Rio he's welcome to come back for 2010, and that he'll get no buyout if he chooses to leave. The best move, given the widespread belief that Del Rio already would be gone but for his $15 million buyout, would be for Weaver and Del Rio to work out a settlement of his Jaguars contract, which would allow Del Rio to leave -- and which would give Weaver [the opportunity to hire a new head coach]. Now the news is that Del Rio, after a meeting with the owner of the Jags today, has turned down USC and is staying in Jacksonville: After a profitable meeting with owner Wayne Weaver this morning in Jacksonville, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio will stay in his current job for at least the 2010 season. Del Rio...was thought to be on shaky ground with Weaver...But Weaver opted for something few owners in the league choose these days -- stability. The Jaguars played 16 rookies this season, including both starters at tackle on offense, and 33 players appeared in their first games for Jacksonville in the 2009 season. ... The offshoot of this story is that Southern Cal will have to move on in its search for a new coach, having seen candidates Mike Riley, Chris Petersen, Jeff Fisher, Steve Sarkisian and now Del Rio stay in their jobs rather than seek one of the premier jobs in college football.
