  2. Interesting that JR was not a 5 star. Sort of reminds me how this is far from an exact science.
  3.
  4. Yes. Russell was a 5-star QB by Scout and a Parade All-American.

Russell is tremendously talented and probably in the top 10 for LSU. But he can't compare with Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon, Hall-of-Famers Y.A. Tittle and Jimmy Taylor, or 3-time All-Americans like Tommy Casanova.

Cannon was a man among boys, a very big back for his day at 210 pounds, he was heavier than all but one of his starting linemen in 1958. Plus he played both way, being an exceptional linebacker as well as a halfback.
  5. Cannon, for his era, had great speed too.

As for talent, my vote goes to Casanova. I think that guy could've been an All-American at several positions.
  6. Yeah, and "most talented" can be in the eye of the beholder as well. Most people, I think, would think in terms of raw physical ability, but if you don't have the work ethic or are not sufficiently "coachable", then that raw ability is never (Cecil Collins) refined properly.

In terms of refining one's natural talents, you'd be hard-pressed to beat Billy Cannon. Billy was one of the very first to actively lift weights, something frowned upon previously for making a player too bulky and slow.

By being a pioneer and busting his ass to be the best he could be---to get the most out of what God gave him---Billy is clearly the best ever to play at LSU, IMO.

(PS-For selfish reasons---i.e., since I'd get to see him play live for his entire LSU career---let's hope Joe McKnight makes this whole thread irrelevant by the end of his Tiger career.)
  7. You say that as if Russell wasn't highly sought after. Russell was one of the most highly touted quarterbacks of his signing class.
  8. In 1960, Cannon went #1 overall to the Los Angeles Rams, also #1 to the Houston Oilers of the AFL. He signed with the Oilers.

Same year, Johnny Robinson went #3 to the Detroit Lions, and was drafted by the KC Chiefs, he signed with the Chiefs and had a great career with them, better than Cannon's pro career. Robinson got a SB ring with the Chiefs.

That was better draft positions the Ronnie Brown and Caddilac Williams, just thought I'd point that out!
  9. We're talking about Rivals here. Scout does not have the evaluation capabilities as of yet.
  10. I think he is one of the great ones. I'm sure Saban is taking all of the credit for his accomplishments.
