Okay, here's my take after mulling over and watching the D last night. I saw a lot of things I liked. Including intensity on the sidelines by BDP. However, I think if you really look closer and listen to what CLM says week in and week out, you begin to understand the mindset behind the D.
1. He says we blitz relative to down and distance, so no distance, no blitz (very predictable)
2. A trend of a mobile/spread quarterback, less blitzes as defense trying to keep play in front.
Notice last night. When did we start to really pin our ears back? When Garcia got nicked, and was less mobile. Also when it appeared that their running game was no threat, and they were in full passing mode.
I think this is why we have such a frustrating "jeckyl and hyde" defense.
Obviously other factors come into play that really make the D look "worse" at times. Erratic QB play-thus limited offense, new starters, injuries, blown assignments and the biggest....horrendous tackling.
This is not posted as criticism but more as an observation. Personally, I would like to see us go to more of a defense like say, Nix's at Ole Miss, and go back to one coordinator. But at the end of the day I trust the man with the hat...:milesmic:
BTW, College Football News makes a similar point here:
The turning point, one has to concede, came when Garcia—early in the second half—slightly limped off the field after absorbing a hit that produced a fumble and a Tiger recovery just past midfield. A superb play by LSU’s resilient defense brought about a turn of events that was felt beyond the game’s immediate flow. Far more than causing a change of possession and the flipping of field position, that play took away Stephen Garcia’s legs, and after that moment, a previously effective Carolina attack was reduced to rubble.
