I think I remember reading somewhere before that Fred Phelps was caught performing homosexual acts while he was in college (note: a search did not bring up anything, so take this as heresay, and very likely untrue, based on his biography as being a Bible-thumping theologist-hating theology student). He reacted in an extreme way and began a vendetta against homosexuality (to prove he wasn't gay). I think it is just a projection of his denial (forced closeted homosexuality) that has become an obsession he cannot escape. The man is afraid of himself more than he is afraid of anyone else in this world, and he found a way to form company through his misery by brainwashing his children often and always.
