The statues should be reserved for legendary greatness. Y.A. Tittle, Billy Cannon, and Jim Taylor. At the PMAC you would have guys like Maravich, Pettit, and O'Neal. It should encompass a lifetime of uncommon excellence. Ok, Cannon didn't have a lifetime of excellence but he did win a Heisman.
In OU's stadium they have banners with past All-Americans pictures on it, and the year they made the team. It's in the inner lower section of their stadium, and goes all the way around the stadium. I thought it looked nice. We could do bronze plaques and display them around the exterior of the stadium. Maybe replace one window in the old student dorms with a player's plaque. There's enough windows, and it wouldn't take away from the looks of the stadium. Coaches could show them to incoming freshmen, and challenge them with earning a place in LSU history. Something like this..
I don't think it would help recruiting much at all. Play time, national exposure, coaching staff, and facilities are the major reasons a recruit choses a school. The idea of having a statue of him someplace would definately not be a factor.
I agree 100%. A plaque would mean little if it were given to anyone who accomplished something. The Hall of Fame would be a good place, but may be a little redundant since the people in question are already represented there.
How could I! His high school football coach was my baseball coach. There were so many I may have forgotten others.
A good idea. I like the plaque thing, inside the stadium. It shows respect for tradition and the contribution of individuals to our tradition. Its a small plus added to the recruiting thing. Who knows, if all else is equal, it could pull one kid a year from going somewhere else. To be meaningful, it should be limited, I like the all americans only idea. It takes the decision out of LSUs hands, into impartial (?) territory. But its objective, and limited.
