I can understand BYU joining the Big 12 or the Pac 12, but not Notre Dame. I'm not sure when their contract with NBC expires, that would come into play. Notre Dame has a national following and there would be a little cache' lost in football if it were a member of a certain conference within a limited geographic area. Not to mention the Big 12 hasn't done itself any favors presenting itself as a premium brand lately. I would think Notre Dame could join a better, stable conference like the ACC, Big 10, etc., if it wanted to. And eventually it may want to, if they keep having sub par seasons because the Irish haven't seen the glory days in a long time and that can't be good for growing their fan base among the younger generation.
Well yeah... I was just doing that from an 'LSU'/BR perspective... For all I care the Gayturds can use all their Gatoraide royalties for jet fuel. Back when I was competing in gymnastics (colleges did this on a 'regional' basis not conference basis back then) Florida's gymnastic team flew to Tuscaloosa for the 'regionals'.... my team had to take a bus (and the stupid bus driver got lost... this is back before 20 went all the way to Tuscaloosa)... we always said that's the reason we came in 2nd to Florida ~ (at least we beat Bama, Awburn and UGA by a wide margin)
The Irish wouldn't want any part of playing Texas, Oklahoma and Okie St every year. They have a hard enough time with their current schedule.
I know, and I know they would be separate divisions and not play every year. I just think it's stupid. Too spread out.
You think that's spread out just imagine if the PAC-12 added Texas / Oklahoma. Or think about the ACC who just added Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh to Miami is over 1200 miles. Conferences do what they have to do to survive and thrive. The SEC being proactive and going after the teams they want now is a GOOD thing. It's much better than sitting still saying, "No one can touch us." Only to react when it's too late and you're left with crumbs to pick from. Do I like it? I'd rather everything stay the same. But it's apparent other conferences are trying to make moves to gain traction against the SEC, so I'd rather we do what we need to to stay on top.
I thought about this too, but my last post was long enough so I didn't put it in. ND is playing a weak schedule right now and is not faring very well. Even some of the traditional powers they play that are normally tough are way down, for example, (USC, Michigan). This is an easy schedule and they usually have trouble getting a few wins over .500. In the SEC the Irish would have a losing record in most years IMO. Maybe they hover around .500 in the Big 12 if they can play Baylor every year and keep Wake Forest as an out of conference game.
