I like Pinkel as well. I'll admit that I am not certain of a lot of his history prior to this season, but he has what I would call the smoothest football team in CFB right now. By that I mean everything his team does looks like it is easier than it is. They seem to be where they are supposed to be without effort. Their gameplans appear to be in line with their opponents, and the team meshes well. It also doesn't hurt that he had his only real star at the quarterback position. Daniel can make all the throws. I won't say they have had near the schedule as LSU, but they have played some tough games and won with not nearly the individual talent level of the Tigers. He has created a team that is all on the same page. If we could have had that here it would be scary to see what this team would have done with teh talent we have.
Brian Kelly, Cincinnati HC. 46 y/o and has won everywhere he has coached. Light on big time college football experience, but I like what he is doing at Cincy in his first year. His name is mentioned for the Michigan job. Cincy - 9-3 first year Central Michigan - took an awful program and had winning records 2 of 3 years and a bowl bid. Grand Valley State - Div II school. 118-35-2 in 13 years. 5 conference titles and 2 NCs.
In no particular order and knowing nothing of their availability (or how to spell most of their names)... Tedford- Has Cal at a top 25 level. A good Xs and Os guy. Petrino- Built Louiville in to a top ten program. Schiano- Has Rutgers bowl eligible... Rutgers Grobe- Good potential, but I think he is content at Wake Tubberville- Proven SEC winner, though I can't stand him Zook- Can recruit, got a bum deal at Florida. With the right OC and DC could be a great SEC coach
Didn't Jack del Rio (JAX) express interest when we were replacing Saban? If Tuberville does go somewhere, I could see us extending a hand to Muschamp to replace Pelini (if Auburn doesn't promote him in this situation)
Yes, his wife is from Louisiana. I believe he got into a little trouble with the owner of the Jags when he failed to clear contact with LSU with him. I may be wrong but I believe the owner basically told him that if he met with LSU he would be fired. EDIT: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=1956527 "It is unclear if Del Rio had originally agreed to the interview and reneged -- possibly after further considering his contractual situation with the Jaguars -- or if LSU officials misunderstood his intentions"
Would we want an NFL style HC to coach on the college level... seems to me that doesn't work out well very often.
I tend to agree with you. In addition, isn't Del Rio known for a pretty conservative offense ? However, I like a HC who is a defensive guy.
Not just NFL "style", but ALL NFL. He's never coached at the college level. And he's a Cali boy! Perhaps someone will take a chance with him though. He's a great person and I think he could do well in college. He's a baseball player too BTW. Played at USC with Mark McGwire and Randy Johnson. As for Coker, I've read he may be talking to the Hogs.
For the record, my pick is Jack Del Rio. However, I'm hearing that Miles is no longer at the top of the Michigan wish list. They're said to be pursuing Ferentz at Iowa.
