Happened to be nosing around nationalchamps.net, and saw that Auburn went 11-0 in 1993. Making a note of the fact that they were not national champions that year, I couldn't help but notice that Auburn has had two undefeated seasons with no championships, which makes me start to scratch my head. So, I'm wondering who went to the national championship that year, and if that team was also undefeated. On a side note, Auburn also had consecutive undefeated seasons in '57 and '58, and went to the championship only in '57. 10-0 in '57 and 9-0-1 in '58. What a weird record. Not trying to have a love fest for Auburn or anything, just making observations.
Pat Dye got them probation. The Little General Terry went undefeated but was on probation because of Pat Dye.
There wasnt a "Championship" to go to until the BCS was formed in 1998. Tennessee won the first championship game, beating FSU in the Fiesta Bowl. FSU won the AP and Coaches polls in 1993 by beating Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. They were 12-1.
93 is when ND beat a charlie ward led FSU team in, what was called the greatest game ever played, only to turn around and lose to BC on a last second field goal. ND ended the season second behind FSU in the polls. Ward went on to win the heisman too.
The '93 Auburn team beat LSU, Arkansas, and Georgia on the road but didn't get much in the way of media coverage due to the TV ban as part of it's probation. It was a good team, one filled with Pat Dye's players and - important to note - the defense was still coached by DC Wayne Hall, a defense which held opponents to a 17 ppg average while the offense averaged 32 ppg. :hihi:
