That's the media's M.O. That's all they are there to do: stir the pot and create a story if there already isn't one. I believe a LARGE portion (if not ALL of it) of those that worry about Miles leaving comes directly from the whole Saban-fiasco and while I don't agree that it's something we need to discuss (already listing possible coaching candidates) right now until we have official reports that Michigan is actively talking to Miles about it, I understand some levels of concern. But we're taking this thing WAY too far this early. None of us can predict what CLM will do. I can't emphatically state that he won't leave because of the team he has here, etc. and no one can claim he's "as good as gone" or some B.S. notion that he would take a pay cut to go to Michigan (that notion is one of the dumbest I've ever heard...). At the VERY least in all of this, one thing is certain, unlike Saban's annual flirtations with NFL teams, if Signing day '08 comes and goes and Miles is still our coach, he'll remain our coach for a long time; if he's not Michigan's coach by January, he'll be ours for as long as he wants. And another thing...Seeing all these people gloom-n-doom this situation pisses me off more because some of the same people that are all "he's as good as gone" crap are the ones that never wanted him here in the first place or flat out "dissed" the guy at EVERY opportunity they could get, but NOW....NOW they get all nervous that he could leave??? Hope a lesson is learned in all of this no matter WHAT the ultimate outcome is, and that lesson should be: SUPPORT YOUR DAMN COACH FOR A CHANGE!!!! ESPECIALLY ONE THAT'S 24-4 INSTEAD OF BITCHING ABOUT HOW HE WEARS HIS HAT, OR WHAT FREAK'N HEADSET HE'S WEARING, OR THAT HE DOESN'T SHOW ENOUGH EMOTION ON THE SIDELINES FOR YOU OR THAT BECAUSE HE KICKED 3 PLAYERS OFF THE TEAM BECAUSE THEY WERE ROTTEN EGGS YOU SEEM TO THINK HE HAS POOR RECRUITING JUDGEMENT....SUPPORT YOUR DAMN COACH AND HE WON'T LEAVE!!!!
you damn post police need to chill. given the success at lsu and the upcoming opening at UM concerns about clm and possible replacements are valid. they in no way show a lack of respect or support for clm or lsu. the only way that a posters comments on this issue affect the situation is if the poster also happens to be a huge booster. i assume most if not all of you are not huge boosters. clm will take the um job if offered AND lsu will roll on without a hitch.
I think if he has confidence in his ability, and I think he does, he will go if Michigan calls. That is based solely on the number of other coaches who have left successful programs to go back home. I hope we get a national championship before he leaves so we can have the same expectations of the next LSU coach. It makes the bulletin boards much livelier when we choose sides.
Can we at least postpone all this talk until the end of the season? Why talk about it now? It's not like he's going to up and leave in the middle of the season.
Re: Miles to Michigan Man, I couldn't agree with you more but its human nature that this kind of thing is going to happen. LSU has had more of their share with this kind of stuff unfortunately! Not only is this the best LSU team ever, better than 2003 team. They also play better all around than any other LSU or college team. What a well coached team, the backups don't miss a beat. I'm keeping perspective and say its early and things can change but man am I sold on this coaching staff. Having said all this I can't help but become a Michigan fan and hope they win out from here on so that Lloyd Car will stay their coach!
Re: Miles to Michigan I don't know if this is a distraction for the team or not, but it is my firm belief that this will NOT hurt LSU recruiting. Here is why: 1) This is not a multi-year issue like the rumors of Saban going to the NFL. Miles will either leave this year or he'll stay for the foreseeable future. Therefore, no recruits are going to be left wondering "If I go to LSU, maybe the coach will leave in a year or two and leave me playing for a stranger." He'll either leave this year, in which case we can get a new coach and new staff in place before national signing day and recruits can decide for themselves. 2) It is my opinion that it is unlikely Miles leaves, for the simple reason that I am not sure that Michigan will even offer. Who's to say that Michigan will decide they absolutely need Les Miles? I think Les if a really good coach, who has gotten behind the wheel of a race car and has kept it off the fence and out of the infield. He found a great program here and has kept it up, but does that mean he's the man to take over a struggling program and get it going in the right direction? I'm not so sure. It's just not a problem he's been faced with here. 3) If Miles leaves, we will make a great hire who will come in and lock down a solid recruiting class this year and start really racking up next year. If we're going to have to have the handicap of a coach recruiting at the last minute, this is the year for it anyway, with in-state talent reportedly not being so great anyway.
You're absolutely right. Now I don't feel like I've ever "dissed" Miles, but he hasn't been my favorite coach at least up until this year. He seems like he's gotten more comfortable in his position and shown a little more fire and passion. That said.....you can't argue with his record and the fact is the guy surrounds himself with other great coaches and has gotten some nice talent in here. If UM turns out to be interested in him it should be a good indication of what we've got here and if he ends up leaving will undoubtedly be missed by all when that day comes. It's sad, but if the guy leaves maybe he'll get his due and finally be given credit for keeping us at the top.
From today's Advocate: A bigger story is the pot of gold likely waiting for Miles at season’s end. Whether that pot will be colored purple and gold or maize and blue is the salient question. Since Michigan’s 39-7 embarrassment Saturday against Oregon, just about everyone I’ve spoken to in and around the LSU program (except Athletic Director Skip Bertman) believes Miles would take the Michigan job if offered should Lloyd Carr retire or resign. The reasons why Miles would go are numerous. He’s a Michigan man who coached and played under Bo Schembechler. Much of his family is in Ohio, about two hours from Ann Arbor. His wife, Kathy, is from Michigan. They met at UM. Michigan, despite its current struggles, is still one of the nation’s best jobs. LSU’s recent success aside, Michigan has more tradition and a bigger national name. It has to be even more appealing for a man who wears his love for his alma mater openly. And, at 54 come November, he has to wonder whether he would ever get another shot. Big Blue has had three coaches since 1969. There are also reasons to stay at LSU. The program has rolled into the big time. Stud recruits keep coming. He has a great staff. He has a wife and four kids I have to believe he would hate to uproot after three years here. There are a few more lucrative reasons to stay. According to LSU, if the Tigers win the national championship the school automatically must make him one of the nation’s top three highest-paid coaches. That would bump Miles from the $1.8 million mark to about $3 million per year. I don’t believe Miles’ be all, end all in coaching is money. But when you’re talking that kind of cash it has to be a consideration for anyone. And it could give Michigan pause to have to pay him $3 million (you figure $2 million if LSU has a season like 2005 and 2006), plus the $1.25 million Michigan buyout in Miles’ LSU contract. I think Miles would go if offered. But timing — and financial considerations — could force Michigan to look elsewhere. http://www.2theadvocate.com/columnists/rabalais/9727752.html A Michigan friend tells me that UM and spending money are far from synonymous.
It's not a given UM will offer the job to Miles. They are not desperate like Bama was to offer 32 million for a football coach. Props to LSU for the buyout clause to get something in return if UM goes after CLM. Our program has flourished to a higher level under CLM. Not every coach at every school understands it's a privilege to represent a school as it's football coach. I believe CLM is a coach who does consider it a privilege to coach at LSU. At the same time schools understand the importance of having a football coach of good moral character and integrity like CLM. Bama can attest to this from experience with two hires they made. There is no way to know what will play out. Of course all the media hacks who were writing what a bad coach we have this summer are now writing about CLM will leave when UM calls. This will never change. As for LSU, we have a great coaching staff. We all hope CLM stays. If he chooses to follow his heart then I have no doubt we will have the longest list of candidates that any school has had in recent memory. Not all schools have this luxury. So in conclusion, there's nothing we can do until the season is over and things play out. For now it's MTSU. :geauxtige
