    Steve Spurrier's Record. entire career.= 178-59-2 (.746) 1 national title

    Bear Bryant's Record entire Career=
6 national titles (1961,64-65, 1973, 78-79); retired in 1982 as the winningest coach of all time (323-85-17 record), since passed by Penn State's Joe Paterno and Florida State's Bobby Bowden; 15 bowl wins, including 8 Sugar Bowls.

You took math in school right? come on tirk, you know I'm not an idiot man. :dis: thats just wrong. I did check out the numbers before I made the first post. I had a feeling I was correct and the records proved it.

I'm not gonna get in a pissin match with you, I've always been friendly with you, but man this is just wrong.

You are wasting your time with this one, he is the only one on the board that knows anything about football just ask him. What were the scholarship limitations during Bryant's early years? Did the parity that exists today exist back then? Bryant was a great great coach, that doesn't mean that Spurrier wasn't great also. Too much racing fuel fumes is obviously bad for the brain!!!:dis: :dis: :dis: :dis: :dis: :dis: :dis: :dis:

That is a huge factor. The parity that exist today, not only in the SEC but the whole college football landscape, is much more of a factor these days than back when the Bear coached. With all the parity that existed, Spurrier still managed to dominate. That says a lot about the guy. Could he come back to college and pick up where he left off? Only time will tell, but he deserves every bit of praise for what he has done on the collegiate level.

One more thing, if Utah and the other so called "BCS busters"(Boise St., Louisville etc....) aren't evidence of the parity that exist in college football today, then I don't know what is.

The SEC now is nothing like the SEC back in the 50's and 60's.

I never said Spurrier was a bad coach, he just might not be as good as everyone thinks. I wish you'd say some of these things to me face to face, I really don't think you'd have the balls to do that though. good day

also the SEC has always been a tough conference to play in.

Im pretty much on Racin dudes side.

For every argument about parity you have some off setting factors. For example...30 years ago there wasnt near the emphasis on the advanced scientific physical training you have today. Players were much smaller. Today you have fewer players on each roster but they are MUCH bigger, MUCH faster and MUCH stronger. In essence teams are getting more physical ability out of each player than they ever did decades ago.

Its easy to talk about parity but the bottom line is, Bear Bryant was one of the greatest coaches ever. He got so much from his players it was unbelievable. Spurt is a great coach but hasnt ascended to the height of a Bear Bryant...at least not yet anyway.

BTW...I would NOT want Spurt here...NEVER, NO WAY...NOT ON YOUR LIFE!

The problem with that argument is that it was the same for every team not just the Bear's so it wasn't a disadvantage for his teams. He was a great if not the greatest coach in NCAA history and I wouldn't want Spurrier either but not because he isn't a great coach.
