I don't think this is by design. They simply can't get the running game going. Coach was tired of seeing 2nd and 9.
Yep ... and I have a feeling they are going to be seeing much of the same this weekend. Our Defense is just not going to give up the run. Their efficiency against the run is just mind boggling ..... just ask Ballard and L. James. By the 2nd Quarter, they will be so one dimensional we'll be able to drop the LBs back as DBs. Never seen a 4-0-7 defense before ... but ...
I have some concerns about WVU's passing game. Primarily the short passing game. Did UO attempt a short passing game or were they just trying to go down field?
Yes, some of those pesky outlet passes ate up chunks of yards in the Moo U game. I hope we can eliminate that, because if WVU watched that film you can bank on them trying to dink pass all the way down the field. I'm sure Chavis is keen to this and addressed it though. This is actually the exact reason I think our first pick 6 comes in this contest.
That is what I was thinking, you counter the short passing game being aggressive and giving the scare of interceptions. Given that we have two converted safeties playing LB and our DE's run a 4.5 forty, makes me feel a bit better. And that’s without mentioning our DB's
Our offense is what it is: what Miles thinks gives LSU the best chance to win. If that means run first and that works, then it is what it will be. I am a contender that our offense has certainly been hampered by poor QB play the last 3 years. I will say this, though, Miles is no dummy, and if our QB play continues to improve (whether it is JL, JJ, or Mett), we will see more passing plays. He is not going to run just for run's sake. Our entire passing game would have been completely different the last three years if we had the QB's to get the ball to the WR. Just look at our WR talent the last 3-5 years, it has been un real, just no QB's to get the ball to them. I like where this team is in the run/pass mix and WVA will feel the hurt Sat. Night.
I can understand the grind it out philosophy to wear out your opponent, but against the stronger teams of the SEC they'll trade blow for blow and I don't feel as confident in that philosophy. I think because we are more able to pass we need to take advantage of that to loosen the run and to build up a lead before we set to grinding. I'd like to see at least +14 before we really set to grinding, preferably +21. Our running backs are stout, our line is stout, our D is stout, and with a lead all those things would be just that much better. I am concerned with the short passes. Chavis hasn't shown an ability to stop that his whole time here, really. He probably does a better job inside the 20s, but that's one of the weaknesses of our D (as predicted by UT commentators).
Moo U did it with backs out of the backfield. It was driving me crazy because it seemed like there wasn't an LB anywhere close. As I have stated before, I never played a down of organized football (always been kinda small for my size) but I believe that backs coming out of the backfield are LB's responsibility. True?
