You are 100% correct. I noticed the same thing and it was for petty little plays in the game. Not only does that slow down the game, but also affects momentum. I remember Florida St. lining up at the goal line after a long pass only to have the whistle blow and the previous play reviewed. Very anticlimactic. Also, at the end of the game FSU was able to burn off a LOT of time on their last possession. I don't like it, either.
I may be mistaken but I think that they had already snapped the ball when the official blew the play dead to review the previous play. It was pretty loud so I coudn't really tell from the TV broadcast. Could you imagine a 3rd or 4th and goal for the opposition in the north endzone with the student section roaring and the official all of a sudden stops play for a review. Sometimes they should just think, because overall I kinda like the rule if used properly.
It was a pretty bang bang call. I have Tivo so I watched it a couple of times and you could clearly see the sideline official waving his hands and running out on the field as the ball was snapped. You couldn't hear the whistle, though, like you pointed out. If I remember correctly after that play the officials had to blow the next play dead as well because of a clock issue. That's another thing that slows the game down is when they review a play they also check the spot and the game clock! :dis: :dis: :dis: I am in favor of having replays, but I like the way the pros do it. Give the option to the coaches and let the refs rule the play on the field.
